CNIC Renewal Online 2026: Fee, Documents & Pak ID App Method (Step by Step)

Quick answer

You can renew your Smart CNIC from home using NADRA's Pak ID app. The fee is Rs 750 (normal), Rs 1,500 (urgent) or Rs 2,500 (executive). For a simple renewal you only need your existing CNIC, a phone with a camera for fingerprint and photo capture, and a debit/credit card to pay. The new card is couriered to your address.

A CNIC (Computerised National Identity Card) is needed for almost everything in Pakistan — opening a bank account, buying a SIM, getting a passport, travelling, applying for jobs and even receiving BISP payments. Once your card expires, banks and mobile companies can block services linked to it. The good news is that CNIC renewal online is now possible without visiting a NADRA office, using the official Pak ID app.

This guide explains the latest CNIC renewal fee, the documents you need, the full online process, the office method, and the mistakes that cause applications to be rejected.

CNIC renewal fee 2026 (Smart NIC)

NADRA charges the same fee for a new Smart NIC, renewal, modification and duplicate card. You choose the category based on how quickly you need the card.

CategoryFeeApproximate processing time
NormalRs 750About 30 days
UrgentRs 1,500About 15–23 days
ExecutiveRs 2,500About 9–10 days

Note: Processing times are counted after your application is approved and do not include courier delivery. NADRA reviews its fee schedule from time to time — the app shows the exact amount before you pay, so always check it there. Overseas Pakistanis apply for a NICOP, which has different fees in US dollars.

Documents required for CNIC renewal

For a simple renewal (no change in name, address, marital status or other details) you need very little:

  • Your existing or expired CNIC (the number and, ideally, the physical card)
  • A smartphone with a working front camera and internet (for online renewal)
  • A mobile number and email address you can access for OTP codes
  • A debit or credit card for online payment

If you also want to change information while renewing, keep supporting documents ready:

  • Address change: utility bill, rent agreement or property papers of the new address
  • Marital status / spouse name: Nikah Nama registered with NADRA (Union Council marriage certificate)
  • Name or date of birth correction: matric certificate or other supporting proof; some corrections require a visit to a NADRA Registration Centre (NRC)

CNIC renewal online with the Pak ID app: step by step

The Pak ID app (listed as "Pak Identity" on Google Play and the App Store) is NADRA's official app, and it also has a web version at id.nadra.gov.pk. Download it only from the official store listing published by NADRA.

  1. Install and sign up. Open Pak ID and create an account with your CNIC number, mobile number and email. Enter the OTP codes sent to your phone and email.
  2. Choose the service. From the home screen select Identity Card and then Renewal (or Modification if you want to change details).
  3. Verify your fingerprints. The app uses your phone's camera to scan your fingerprints. Use good light, clean fingers and keep your hand steady. If verification fails, the app may ask a family member with a valid CNIC to verify you.
  4. Take a live photograph. Stand against a plain, light-coloured wall. Remove glasses, keep your face straight and avoid shadows — poor photos are the most common reason for rejection.
  5. Review your details. Check your name, parents' names, address and date of birth carefully. Choose where the card should be delivered.
  6. Select the category and pay. Pick Normal, Urgent or Executive and pay the fee shown in the app by card.
  7. Save your tracking ID. After submission you will receive a tracking number. Use it to check your CNIC status in the app or by SMS.

Once approved, your new Smart CNIC is printed and sent to your address by courier. Many applicants also receive a digital copy of the card in the app.

How to renew CNIC at a NADRA office

Choose the office method if you are not comfortable with online payment, if fingerprint verification fails on the phone, or if your data needs a major correction.

  1. Visit your nearest NADRA Registration Centre (NRC) or Mega Centre with your old CNIC. Arrive early — tokens can run out on busy days.
  2. Collect a token and wait for your turn.
  3. At the counter your photograph and fingerprints are taken and your data is entered.
  4. Review the printed form carefully, then pay the fee at the counter.
  5. Keep the receipt — it has your tracking ID. You will get an SMS when the card is ready for collection from the same centre.

Common mistakes that delay CNIC renewal

  • Blurred or shadowed photo in the app — retake it in daylight.
  • Fingerprint mismatch — worn or dry fingers often fail; try again after washing and drying hands, or use the office.
  • Wrong delivery address — the courier cannot deliver if the address is incomplete; add a landmark and a reachable phone number.
  • Unregistered marriage — you cannot add a spouse's name unless the Nikah is registered with NADRA through the Union Council.
  • Using fake agents or websites — no one can "speed up" your application for extra money. Apply only through Pak ID or an NRC.

Tip: Renew before your card expires. An expired CNIC can block bank transactions, mobile wallet accounts and SIM re-verification, and you may need a valid CNIC for passport renewal as well — see our passport renewal guide.

Online vs NADRA office: which should you choose?

PointPak ID app (online)NADRA Registration Centre
Waiting in queueNone — apply any time from homeToken and waiting time, often 1–3 hours
FeeSame NADRA fee, paid by cardSame NADRA fee, paid at counter
BiometricsPhone camera fingerprint scanScanner at the counter (more reliable for worn fingers)
Data correctionsSimple changes supportedBetter for complex corrections and family-tree issues
Card deliveryCourier to your addressCollect from the same centre

For most adults with unchanged details, the online route is faster and avoids a day off work. Senior citizens, people whose fingerprints are faint, and anyone whose parents' records are incomplete usually find the office quicker overall, because problems are solved on the spot.

What happens if you don't renew an expired CNIC?

An expired CNIC is still your identity number, but many services check the expiry date. Banks may restrict transactions until you update your CNIC in their records, mobile wallets such as JazzCash and Easypaisa can pause accounts, and you cannot complete a passport renewal or many FBR processes with an expired card. BISP beneficiaries may also face payment issues at biometric verification. Renewing on time — and updating the new expiry date with your bank afterwards — avoids all of this.

Lost CNIC? Apply for a duplicate

If your card is lost or damaged, choose Duplicate instead of Renewal in the Pak ID app. The fee is the same as renewal, and your CNIC number stays the same on the new card. If you suspect the lost card is being misused, also check the SIMs registered on your CNIC.

NADRA helpline

For questions about your specific application, call NADRA on 1777 from a mobile or 051-111-786-100, or email through the contact options in the Pak ID app. Keep your tracking ID ready.
